Yuma County Annual Review

The year 2018 was a period of continued progress in expanding services to Yuma County residents despite continuing state budget mandates hitting the bottom line, officials said this month.

This was enabled in part by improving financial conditions outside the offices and some penny-pinching from within, County Administrator Susan Thorpe said.

"The economy has gotten better so our financial stability is there, it's not booming but we're in better shape than we were before," she said.

Town of Wellton Annual Review

The town of Wellton’s 2018 was spent shoring up the Coyote Wash Golf Course while signs of a new growth spurt began to sprout in the east Yuma County community. 

Town Manager Larry Killman said taking over management of the town-owned golf course from previous leaseholder John Bass on May 1 was the biggest project Wellton had to take on, due to the condition its 18 holes were in. 

“We’ve put $400,000 into it in the first six months, just basically sprinkler systems, and trying to fix things that haven’t been replaced. It was run-down, really bad,” he said.

Editor’s Note: As 2018 comes to a close, the Yuma Sun reporting staff met with local government officials for a look back at the year. This story is one in a series called “2018: Year in Review.”

Yuma experienced a whirlwind year of activity in 2018.

“It’s a huge year for economic development and job creation,” City Administrator Greg Wilkinson said. “We were extremely busy on the economic development side, tremendously successful both as a city and working with partners.”
